Brown Concrete and Black Ostrea Join Array of Options for Focal Sopra N°2

Focal has introduced two new finishes to its Sopra N°2 Speakers: Black Ostrea and Brown Concrete. These limited-edition finishes are expected to become available in January 2023.

The Sopra N°2 floorstanding loudspeaker is acclaimed for both its performance and its design. Sopra in Italian means "above" or "over," and the French speaker maker Focal certainly went above and beyond with the Sopra. Equipped with best midrange drivers ever developed by Focal, Sopra N°2 pushes back the limits of sound reproduction in terms of transparency in a very compact enclosure. Its sound is "fleshy" and detailed with a full and articulated bass, overall coherence, and harmonic richness.

Focal introduced its Sopra line in 2015. This included the stand-mounted N°1 and the floorstanding N°2. A year later came Sopra N°3 floorstanding speakers, followed by a center speaker, surround speakers, and a subwoofer.

The Black Ostrea finish is inspired by the oyster, a sea creature whose pearlescent, iridescent shades lend it a luxurious appearance. It reveals its full character through its somber color and raw appearance on each of its sides. Created by the concrete effect, the mineral side is precise work carried out by expert operators who strive to make each product unique.

More About the Sopra N°2

The Sopra line can be thought of as a lower-priced version of the Utopia lineup of loudspeakers. Unlike the larger-than-life Utopia, however, Sopra aims for compactness to ensure easy integration into reasonably sized rooms. Sopra N°2 goes well in rooms measuring up to 320 square feet (30 square meters), and is even ideal for larger rooms measuring up to 750 square feet (70 square meters).

The main theme of Sopra is deliberately uncluttered. The grille with an incremental meshing motif protects the beryllium tweeter and gives it a strong identity. This motif is repeated for sealing the curved back panel of the middle section. The terminal board, the thumb nuts and the adjustable spikes have all been specially designed for Sopra, as have the few visible screws, all of which were manufactured by watchmaking experts.

Highlights:

  • 6.5-inch "W" cone midrange drivers with TMD Suspension and NIC Magnetic Circuit = refined midrange
  • 2 x 7-inch woofer with "W" cone and NIC Magnetic Circuit = impressive sound density and bass control
  • IHL (Infinite Horn Loading) beryllium tweeter for back wave absorption = very precise highs
  • Magnetic front grilles for easier handling
  • Tempered glass bass with thickness of 3/4 inch; decoupling spikes made of stainless steel = interfering vibrations are transferred to the ground

Sopra’s cabinet was designed in Focal's cabinet-making facility in Bourbon-Lancy (Burgundy, France) using the same manufacturing process as the Utopia. The 69mm sandwich-machined front panel uses the same principle as "gamma structure" to provide inertia and damping. Its density gives it the inertia necessary to provide a stable mechanical reference for optimal definition. The inside of the cabinet has no parallel side panels, and small Helmholtz resonators have been added to the lower section to prevent vertical standing waves. Focal chose glass as the material for the base of the loudspeaker to provide floor coupling, using spikes, which enabled the fastest propagation time possible, thus eliminating all halo effects in the bass. The architecture of Sopra N°2 hinges around the central section, made by polyurethane injection, which makes it possible to angle the top and bottom subs to achieve "focus time," where the two channels acoustically converge.
