Most stock headphone cables are made of poor, ultra-thin conductors that work as a bottleneck for sound. Poor geometries, no shielding, rubber jackets, and a whole host of other issues in OEM cables can limit the performance of the headphone driver in terms of clarity and definition.

Black Dragon Sound Signature

The Black Dragon is warm and smooth with a musical presentation. Copper strands enhance the body, shape, and immediacy of the music. The detail and expansiveness of the Black Dragon make it a flexible fit where a broad range of musical genres are played. It can also improve bass frequencies on bass-light headphones.

The smooth, musical quality makes it a perfect fit for headphones that tend to sound a bit edgy or bright. Despite its warmth, the Black Dragon does not have a laid back, lush sound. It is much closer to neutral, making it a very natural sounding cable.

Black Dragon and Focal Headphones

Focal Headphone Connector

This cable features a 3.5mm connector that fits most headphones from Focal, including the Stellia, Radiance, Clear, Elear, Elegia, and Clear Pro. It is also compatible with some headphones from other manufacturers, like the Sony MDR-Z7.

This cable is not compatible with the Focal Utopia.

Cable Design

This cable is extremely smooth sounding with a great low end and wonderful voicing. It is not a laid back, lush, or dark-sounding cable. It smooths out the top end making it a little less analytical and a little more natural sounding. It also adds bottom end weight to the lower frequencies and provides a fuller sound and wider soundstage.

Each conductor is made up of a special varying size stranding geometry. The copper stranding is mixed with Kevlar stranding to reinforce the conductor. Making it stronger overall and less prone to failure due to the harsh constant flexing a headphone cable receives. The conductors are then surrounded by cotton and then a layer of Teflon tape. This V2 version is now also shielded and placed in a polyethylene jacket for further protection.

The wire is soldered to the connector with high-quality silver solder. The default 1/4" Plug is the new Furutech CF-763. Furutech's beautifully finished, beautiful sounding CF-763 connectors are the result of meticulous engineering and careful audition of various suitable materials. The CF-763 features an nonmagnetic rhodium-plated α (Alpha) phosphor bronze conductor and fluoropolymer insulation for minimal impedance and a nonmagnetic stainless and carbon fiber finished housing for superior damping.

For XLR connections there are two choices. The FP-601M(R) XLR, which uses a beryllium copper and phosphor bronze α (Alpha) conductor: the body is a copper alloy with PVDF fluoropolymer insulation. The second choice is the top-of-the-line CF-601M(R)XLR, which utilizes an α (Alpha) beryllium copper and phosphor bronze rhodium-plated conductor with carbon fiber and nonmagnetic stainless steel housing. The body is PVDF fluoropolymer insulation with a specially designed cable strain relief.

UP-OCC stands for Ultra Pure Ohno Continuous Casting (OCC). This is not a material but a way of extruding silver and copper to prevent any impurities and fractures in the crystalline structure of the wire. The wire is drawn very slowly to cast as an almost perfect single crystal small diameter conductor. The resulting purity and the size of the cast wire makes a tremendous difference and there is less damage to the near-perfect cast state. We find this UP-OCC process produces a very clean and close to neutral sound in our copper- based and silver-based cables.
