Meze Audio 109 Pro Primal Headphone - Now Available
Bring Out Your Primal Instincts With A New 109 Finish
Bring out your primal instincts with the new 109 Pro Primal Headphone from Meze Audio - a new special edition model featuring a more "rugged" take on the original 109 Pro. This is the latest addition to the exclusive Meze Audio Art Gallery Collection. The 109 Pro Primal has hand-carved ear cups, chiseled groove by groove and delicately sanded. Each 109 Pro Primal is a one-of-a-kind creation; a handmade headphone like no other. Meze Audio applies a coat of linseed oil over the wooden cups, giving it the same aesthetic as the original.
The 109 Pro Primal Special Edition is a dynamic open-back circumaural headphone, and sports the excellent 109 series dual-membrane diaphragm (a combination of Beryllium-coated polymer, cellulose/carbon fiber composite, and copper-zinc alloy). The 50mm dynamic driver (also featured in the original 109 Pro) hits different in an open-back design, providing excellent punchy and dynamic sound, along with great low-end representation for an open-back headphone. The Meze Audio soundstage is incredibly expansive, and provides impactful performances for any genre.
Note that the Primal is only an aesthetic and design change to the 109 Pro, not a sound signature change. To read more about the signature of the 109 driver design, head over to the full review on the 109 Pro headphone here. The 109 Pro Primal Special Edition is a beautifully-designed headphone, and like all their other headphones, another true work of art from Meze Audio.

"At the core of it all, music is an expression of emotion, a celebration of life and a token of everlasting memories. Every part of the 109 PRO, from the premium materials we used to the intricate engineering, embodies that same emotion our favorite music makes us feel.” - Antonio Meze, Lead Designer and Founder of Meze Audio.
The 109 Pro Primal Diaphragm Design
The diaphragm is the heart of the headphone, producing the waves our brains ultimately perceive as sound. In order to meet the acoustic goals Meze Audio set for the 109 PRO, they focused R&D efforts on materials research, looking for the perfect balance between mass and stiffness that would maximize the sonic abilities of the headphone. Their search led to developing the 109 series Dual-Composite Diaphragm – a combination of Beryllium-coated polymer, cellulose - carbon fiber composite and copper-zinc alloy. In a world of fast-paced technology, we bet on proven fundamentals. Meze Audio's new 50mm dynamic driver, assembled and tuned with ultimate precision, allowed them to push the boundaries of speed, accuracy, and dynamic range.
Made of cellulose composite enforced with carbon fiber, the W-shaped dome is able to reproduce high-frequencies with incredible detail, clarity and definition. More durable than conventional alternatives used in dynamic drivers, yet lightweight, this composite helps the 109 Pro and Primal Editions avoid resonances that may lead to harmonic distortion. The ultra-thin torus surrounding the dome is composed of Beryllium-coated semicrystalline polymer, measuring 22 microns in thickness. With the Beryllium coating applied through Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), Meze Audio aimed to increase the stiffness and durability of the driver, while still keeping it light enough to achieve a fast transient response.
Beryllium's high damping qualities also help suppress unwanted resonances, giving the 109 PRO and Primal Edition its neutral, vivid and transparent character. Around the membrane, the ring-shaped stabilizer made of copper-zinc alloy improves the absorption of vibrations to further reduce distortion. The diaphragm is encased in a high-precision machined aluminum frame that has superior rigidity to typical plastics frames and retains perfect surface flatness, which is essential for the precision assembly with the diaphragm.
The 109 Pro Design: Through its open-back design, Meze Audio wanted the 109 PRO to be vivid and exciting, empowering the listener to connect with music on a deeper level. Carefully tuned by their in-house engineering team, it offers emotionally engaging sound with great detail, clarity and just the right amount of punch. Its organic character, paired with superior dynamics, excellent imaging, and full-bodied vocals bring soul-stirring details to life. Besides, it’s easy to drive from most devices, whether we’re talking portable sources or intricate home setups.
The spider-shaped structure and the acoustically transparent grill inside the earcup expose the driver from both sides, creating Meze Audio's most open pattern to date. Following the principles of anthropometrics, they positioned the driver at a precise angle and distance from the ear, to achieve an ideal anatomical fit. Velour cushions comfortably surround the ears, providing the optimal seal to create natural sound. As velour is far softer and more breathable than leather, it also prevents sweat and overheating during lengthy listening sessions. The self-adjusting headband spreads the weight out to deliver even pressure for any head shape and size.
